In diesem Hause wohnte mein Schatz;
Und ringt die Hände vor Schmerzensgewalt;
Was äffst du nach mein Liebesleid,
Das mich gequält auf dieser Stelle
So manche Nacht, in alter Zeit?
The Doppelganger
Still is the night, the alleyways are resting,
In this house lived my sweetheart;
She has, long ago, left the town,
Yet the house still stands in the same place.
There stands also a man and stares upwards,
And wrings his hands from pain's violence;
It shakes me, when I see his face -
The moon shows me my own form.
You doppelganger, you pale companion!
Why do you mock my love-pain,
That tortured me in this place
So many nights, in old times?
