Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has relaunched lifesaving search and rescue operations in the Central Mediterranean Sea, in partnership with the nongovernmental organization Sea-Watch. During the first week of operations, our teams onboard the vessel Sea-Watch 4 rescued more than 200 people in a 48-hour period from August 22-24. As European Union governments have turned a blind eye to the tragedy that continues to unfold off the coast of Libya, organizations like MSF and Sea-Watch have become the only hope for survival for many migrants and refugees. "All of us, we are deciding to die in the Mediterranean rather than to live in Libya or to be in prison in Libya," says Kemo Kebbeh, a man who was rescued in a previous MSF search and rescue operation in 2019. EU governments are supporting the Libyan Coast Guard to intercept people fleeing for their lives and return them to Libya. More than 6,000 people have been returned so far this year—forced back to face an endless cycle of torture, detention, and abuse. Read more: [ Ссылка ]
