STORYLINE:
The Israeli military continued to strike targets in Gaza City after its ruling Hamas militants fired rockets into southern Israel on Saturday, a sudden escalation in violence between Palestinians and Israelis.
Footage showed black smoke rising from locations across the city, while militants were also still firing volleys of rockets back towards Israel.
Hamas had launched an unprecedented attack on Israel at daybreak, firing thousands of rockets as dozens of fighters infiltrated the heavily fortified border in several locations by air, land and sea,
Israel’s national rescue service said at least 40 people have been killed and hundreds wounded, making it the deadliest attack in Israel in years.
The Palestinian health ministry are yet to confirm casualties in Gaza City, where scores of deaths are expected.
