Between July 7 and July 9, 1976, audiences at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre witnessed three classic performances by Lynyrd Skynyrd, as the band recorded the songs that would become One More from the Road, one of the best-selling live albums in rock history. It didn’t take long for One More from the Road (originally released September 13, 1976, on MCA) to become Skynyrd’s most lucrative album; achieving triple-platinum status, One More from the Road was also the band’s first album to chart in the Top 10.

Incorporating such influence's with a grain of gospel, the swampy vibe of Creedence Clearwater Revival, and bluesy swagger of the Rolling Stones and Steppenwolf, Lynyrd Skynyrd deposited a melodic hard-rocking pitch that was both familiar and unique.

Competition was incredibly stiff at the hour the band entered the ring, with acts like Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, Foghat and Blue Oyster Cult occupying the guitar-oriented arena, but thanks to their enormous talent, combined with whale-sized doses of drive and determination, surefire success was guaranteed.

Exploding with energy and skintight performances, “One More From The Road” is party central all the way. The sound quality is excellent and excitement engulfs the air, making the listener feel as if they were right there in the audience, soaking up the enthusiasm and sweat. Jamming guitars, joined by pumping piano passages and captivating choruses pervade the gig. Throughout the album, Lynyrd Skynyrd boogies, smokes, reels and rivets with fierce hunger.

Be it the rough and tough ode to the band’s label, “Workin’ For MCA,” the somber sentiment of “Tuesday’s Gone,” the redneck romp of “Gimme Three Steps,” the greasy and sleazy “Whiskey Rock-N-Roller” or blistering covers of Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads” and JJ Cale’s “Call Me The Breeze,” Lynyrd Skynyrd tackles these tunes with naked emotions. Vibrant versions of “Free Bird,” “Saturday Night Special,” and “Sweet Home Alabama” appear on the album as well.

“Crossroads,” the Robert Johnson-cum-Cream metallic raver included on this live album, deftly encapsulates Lynyrd Skynyrd’s influences: Southern blues-rock diced with the sharp blade of British hard rock. Cream was based conceptually upon the idea of the guitar as the primary rock manipulator; Skynyrd has secured its large audience by maintaining that notion.

But Skynyrd has always relied more on a solid repertoire of rock material than on instrumental expertise. Their three guitarists — Steve Gaines has joined to fill Ed King’s old slot — have a solid arsenal of fills and solo ideas, but none of them has ever created a readily identifiable style. Appropriately, the solos in “Crossroads” never stray too far from Clapton’s on Wheels of Fire. And ironically, the album’s inevitable finale, “Free Bird” — the jam that made Skynyrd instant FM favorites — fails to maintain its heavyweight status, because it sounds, after four sides of the same, like just one final exertion of heavy-metal power.

Ronnie Van Zant’s singing is always solid — barroom-tough on rockers, properly vulnerable on two of the set’s highlights, “Searching” and “The Needle and the Spoon.” The only new song, “Travellin’ Man,’ which is sung with effective and unobtrusive background singers, receives a similarly world-weary interpretation. The album’s real surprise though is a rock-out version of “T for Texas.”

Skynyrd has never aspired to be more than a tough rock & roll band, and their live set — which draws more than half its material from their first two albums — lives up to that. Penny for penny, One More from the Road offers a prime cut of guitar rock.

In 1976, the Fox Theatre was facing the wrecking ball. The ornate, Moorish-style movie palace, which had stood on Peachtree Street in the heart of old downtown Atlanta since 1929, was in disrepair. plans were afoot to demolish the proud old piece of Atlanta history until a public outcry led to the formation of the "Save The Fox Foundation." The Lynyrd Skynyrd band, looking for a way to acknowledge their debt to a city that was largely responsible for their success, had joined the cause, hoping to draw attention to the Fox's plight by making it the site of their upcoming live album, One More For From The Road.
