A gemstone named “Lapis Lazuli” or “Lapis” for short, is a deep-blue metamorphic rock used as semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense color. Lapis Lazuli was first mined in “Sar-e-sang” mines in Badakhshan Province located in northeast Afghanistan in 7th millennium BC. Mines in northeast Afghanistan continue to be a major source of Lapis Lazuli in the world. The Sar-e-sang mine deposits have been worked for more than 6,000 years and Afghanistan has been the source of Lapis for the ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations. This gem has several usages and one of them is making jewelry.
