Canon 50mm 1.4 In Depth Review:
Hey whats up everyone, my name’s Chris Winter and today I’m going to take a look at an incredibly popular lens, the Canon 50mm 1.4.
Now I previously compared this lens to the new 50mm 1.8 STM and found that the gap had been reduced in terms of quality, but I thought I’d take a closer look and see how well this old favourite can perform.
"And guys if you haven’t seen it yet make sure to check out my top 5 list of the best lenses for under $150.
I go into a lot of detail, explaining which ones would be good for you and why. So go check it out, I’ll put a link in the description box below and see what comes out on top
"
Let’s first take a look at the build quality of this 50mm 1.4.
The first thing you’ll notice about this lens is that it’s size is just about right, especially paired up with a camera like the Canon 70d. If you’re coming from a lens like the old nifty 50, you’ll definitely notice a big step up in build quality.
Firstly we’ve got a lot less plastic and lot more metal in this lens, starting with this metalic mount here on the back. Moving forward we’ve got a relatively nice focus ring. It’s not the smoothest focus ring I’ve ever used though and it’s got quite a short focus throw. So for video work, it’s not the best.
Another nice feature is that we’ve got this focus distance window which is always a nice touch.
But overall the build quality is good and coming in at only 290grams, this lens is still light enough to throw in your bag for a days worth of photography.
Let's talk quickly about the focal length.
50mm is a fantastic normal field of view on a full frame body like the 5d or 6d and will work in most environemnts. On a crop sensor body like my Canon 70d here, it converts to around 80mm which turns it into a perfect focal length for portraits.
So the way this lens will look will change a fair bit depeneding on the camera that you use, but it should provide some nice results either way.
So a lot of people get this lens after using the Canon 50mm 1.8.
And theres good reason to do it as the bokeh is improved quite a lot. Where as the old nifty 50 had 5 aperture blades, this 50 1.4 has 8 and it produces some lovely background blur.
As you can see it’s very easy to get some lovely out of focus areas and I’ve been really impressed with just how nice it is.
So if you're looking for a step up in your bokhe, this is a good lens for it.
Let's quickly talk about macro.
With a minium focus distance of 45cm, the 50mm 1.4 isn’t particularly going to get you as close as you’d like to your tiny subjects. But as you can see, because of it’s relatively long focal lenght, you can get some relatively nice shots.
Just a quick tip though, I found shooting at around f5.6 and up produced the best results for those ultra close-ups.
Over my time, I’ve never been particularly impressed with the AF speed of the 50mm 1.4.
Sure it’s a huge step up from the old nifty 50, but compared to the new STM version, it feels like it’s ultrasonic motor is a little dated and a little slow.
That’s not to say it’s a bad performer, but it could definitely do with an update. Maybe Canon could look to put in an STM motor in the future. That's something i’d like to see.
The 50mm 1.4 works ok for video autofocus as well, but again, definitely needs an update to compete with the newer STM lenses.
On my Canon 70d the AF works relatively well, but it actually really quite noisy. So if you’re going to be using an on camera mic, it might not be the best solution.
So if you're looking for a lens to use with a camera like the 70d, i’d definitely be looking at the stm version.
So one of the main advantages of the 50mm 1.4 over it’s more expensive rivals is it’s price.
It currently sells for ….. which is a lot cheaper than the 50mm 1.2 or even Sigma’s 50mm 1.4. But it’s still quite a lot more expensive than the new 50mm 1.8 STM.
My advice would be to look around and see if you can get this on sale, or even pick it up second hand. Or, save a bit of money and get the 50 stm.
So it’s all good talking about the lens, but let’s take a look at some image samples.
The 50mm 1.4 can produce some great shots, especially if you're coming from something like a kit lens or a basic zoom.
Having the ability to blur out your background is great, but the lens itself is definitelyy not the sharpest around. It does get a lot bettter once you stop it down to around f2.8.
It does have some chromatic aberrations but that’s not the worst thing and on my Canon 70d there’s neary no vinetting.
So overall it can take some great shots, but to be totally honest it’s not that much better than the new 50mm 1.8 stm in terms of quality.
