Congress General Secretary (Communication) Jairam Ramesh on January 18 spoke on the upcoming ‘Pran Pratistha Ceremony’ of the iconic Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and Congress’ decline of the invitation to the ceremony. He said that the ceremony would be a political function and thus the Congress declined the invitation. He also accused the BJP and RSS of degrading religions by politicising them.
"India has temples, mosques, churches, Buddhist monasteries, Jain temples... We respect all religions, celebrate all... The ceremony of 22 January is a political function. Therefore, the Congress party said that we are not in a position to accept this invitation but it does not mean that we cannot go to temples, mosques, or churches. We are not anti-religious, we are genuine. Some people follow religion because politicising religion degrades religion, this is what BJP and RSS do," said Jairam Ramesh.
