Is there life in Prague after Christmas? Let's take a walking tour of the city in the days between Christmas and Sylvester! We will walk along Wenceslas Square, turn into Na příkopě Street and finish on Republic Square.
Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí or colloquially Václavák) is one of the main city squares and the center of the business and cultural communities in the New Town of Prague, Czech Republic. Many historical events occurred there, and it is a traditional setting for demonstrations, celebrations, and other public gatherings. It is also the place with the heaviest pedestrian traffic in the country. The Square is named after Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia. It is part of the historical center of Prague, a World Heritage Site.

Na příkopě ("On the moat"), informally also Na Příkopě, Na Příkopech or Příkopy, is a street in the center of Prague, Czech Republic, connecting Wenceslas Square with the Republic Square. It separates the Old Town from the New Town. It is a place of representative buildings, including the headquarters of the Czech National Bank, old palaces, and luxurious shops. a Příkopě street leads to the site of a former 10-meter-wide and 8-meter-deep moat from 1234, which led along the medieval walls of the Old Town. After flowing directly from the Vltava river, the Old Town formed a closed island when the moat was filled. T e moat was covered in 1760. A ter coating, chestnut trees were planted here, and the street was named Ve starých alejích (In old alleys). F om 1845-to 70, the street was named Kolowratská třída, and since 1871 bears the name Na Příkopě. Because it was one of the few vast streets in Prague, it soon became a traffic artery. Since 1875, the first line of the Prague horse-drawn tram has been led here, electrified since 1899. I 1919, Můstek became the first intersection in Prague controlled by a traffic policeman. I 1927, then the second intersection with the light signaling[4] (the first being Hybernská-Dlážděná-Havlíčkova intersection). In the 1960s, traffic jams were getting worse. H wever, in 1978, the metro station was opened at Můstek, and Line B followed the street from 1985 for almost its entire length to Republic Square. A nearly century-old tram line was canceled in 1985, and the bustling urban street turned into a pedestrian zone. O the road appeared many new stores, and it became an important business center of the Prague promenade.

Náměstí Republiky (Republic Square) is a square in the city district of Prague 1 located at the border of the Old and New Towns.
The Square is located on the site of the former moat between the Old and New Towns; its area was created in roughly its current form in the 1860s when Prague's medieval walls were demolished. At the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, however, the local area was built up, and there was a Romanesque church of St. Benedikta. In the vicinity of today's Square, where the Powder Gate and the Municipal House are currently located, in 1383–1484 stood the King's Court, the seat of the Czech kings and courtiers.
The Square was a busy road and tram intersection for many years; in the mid-1970s, Kotva, the largest department store in Czechoslovakia, was opened here. In 1984, the tram line was canceled in Na příkopě Street, opening onto the Square from the south, and a pedestrian zone was established. At the same time, the entire Square was closed due to the construction of the subway station, supplemented by an underpass, and a large part of it was also made accessible to pedestrians.
In 2003-2004, extensive archaeological research was carried out on the premises of the abolished barracks of Jiří z Poděbrady before the construction of the Palladium shopping center (which opened in the fall of 2007) and further reconstruction in parallel with it. The underpass under the Square was extended and connected to the department store. As part of this reconstruction, a pedestrian zone was created here in the summer of 2006 along the entire area of the Square and new paving, which replaced the original granite blocks of different sizes from 1985 (built in connection with the subway). However, the tram track has been preserved and is not separated from the pedestrian area.
