100th Town Hall - Stafford. January 16, 2013 (Transcript Below)
Governor Christie: So we started to do this because I said to my staff I want to have a way to hear from the people who elected me, not with a filter from anybody else. I want to hear from them directly. I want them to be able to ask me questions. I want to be able to answer them. If they're angry I want to hear it. If they're happy I want to hear it. It keeps me grounded. It keeps me in touch at least somewhat to the real world.
And so that's how these started and why they started, and ever since that time, ninety-nine of them before today. It has helped to keep me in touch and they've evolved over time. You know in the beginning I used to stand up on a stage like in a school auditorium mostly and I'd be up on the stage and people would be down below and kind of be being looking up at me and they'd be standing in line waiting for questions and we just didn't like the feel of that.
And so we did that for a little while and then we changed it. We changed it a few different times and they change it I think sometimes just to keep me on my toes when I walk into the place and see how things are going, but the one constant in all of it is you. You come, you show up, you have questions, you have issues, you have problems, and you want me to help answer them, fix them, solve them, and that's what this has become.
