For the first time since India’s independence, the Lok Sabha will hold elections to elect a Speaker for the Lower House after the NDA fielded Om Birla, three-time MP from Kota while the Opposition INDI Alliance fielded eight-time Congress MP from Kerala, Kodikunnil Suresh. The Opposition selected Suresh to contest NDA’s Birla after the BJP apparently refused to commit to giving the Deputy Speaker post to the Opposition bloc. The election for the post will be held on Wednesday.
