This year marks the 74th anniversary of the Korean War that wounded the spirit of the nation. For some, the war is a fading memory, but for others, its history remains as vivid and painful as ever. The reminders of that conflict however, are as strong as it’s ever been amid North Korea’s continued string of provocations, ranging from nuclear test to ballistic missile launches and their recent floating of trash-filled balloons across the border. In the meantime, ordinary North Koreans are continually being deprived of their basic rights, not to mention the untold number of abductees and unreleased prisoners of war under North Korea’s custody.
In this special edition of the Globalists to mark the 74th anniversary of the Korean War, we sit down Professor Lee Shin-hwa, who has served as South Korea’s special ambassador for North Korean human rights for the past two years. She talks about why issue of North Korean human rights violation is a universal concern and what both the South Korean government and the international community must do on that front.


1950년 6월 25일 시작된 한국 전쟁의 비극은 어느덧 74번의 6월을 지나가고 있다. 누군가에게는 점점 희미해지는 기억이고, 또 누군가에겐 생소한 옛 이야기지만, 사실 현대에도 6.25의 상흔은 계속되고 있다. 각종 미사일 포격과 핵실험, 최근의 오물풍선 사태 등 북한의 국제적 도발이 다양화되고 있는 상황에서 북한의 주민들은 나라로부터 받아야 할 기본적인 권리조차 누리지 못하고 있으며, 억류•감금된 납북자들의 문제도 해결되지 못하기 때문이다. 북한의 관심이 앞으로도 도발과 군사력에만 집중된다면 국제 정세에도 악영향을 끼치기에 이와 연결된 북한의 인권 유린 역시 비단 한국만의 문제는 아닌데.
