When you give to Goodwill, you create opportunities for people like Christine.
After the grocery store where Christine worked slashed her hours, she needed a second job to make up the lost wages. But her age and lack of a college degree made finding a position difficult. A friend suggested she apply for a job at the Lexington Goodwill store, and she was hired as a cashier.
She quickly became an invaluable resource for the store. Christine woke up at 4:30 a.m. every day to take her husband to work, because they were sharing one vehicle.
In 2017, she applied for Goodwill’s Wheels-to-Work program, which helps employees and clients of Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee who need reliable transportation. She completed classes on budgeting, defensive driving and car maintenance and learned to drive a manual transmission vehicle. In June of that year, she received the keys to an Audi A4 Quattro that had been donated to Goodwill! She says the car opened new avenues for her life.
