Margaret Garner was a breeding slave in Kentucky who was forced to give birth to over 200 children. Her children were all taken away from her and sold into slavery. In 1856, she and her family escaped to Ohio, but were tracked down by their enslaver. Rather than return to slavery, Margaret killed her daughter and attempted to kill herself. She was acquitted of murder after the jury heard her story.
