The Linux Kernel is quite able to run on anything newer than the 386. Finding a distro that will run on vintage hardware is more difficult. Gentoo can do it, I didn't compile anything on this system though! I used QEMU on a modern Ryzen system for that. It's surprising how much of the kernel can be switched off, no WiFi, no USB no initrd!
Hardware used: AMD K6-2 400Mhz, 128MB PC133 RAM, Cirrus VGA, D-Link (NE2000 compatible) ISA NIC, Aztech Sound Galaxy Waverider 32+ (I38-MMSN826) ISA Sound Card.
The onboard wavetable works in DOS, but is not supported by ALSA (Yet!). The wave table on some other Aztek cars is wired directly to MIDI and is therefore supported by the driver.
