The Cumberland Gap is one of the most iconic geological features on the American landscape and the Cumberland Gap played a huge part in the American Civil War. In March 1862, the Confederate garrison under Colonel James E. Rains defended themselves against a Union brigade under Brigadier General Samuel P. Carter.
This would be the first and largest battle that took place at the Cumberland Gap and the places mentioned in this video can be viewed today at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. The National Park Service has protected these Civil War sites for future generations, so please visit this historic place in the American story and see where thousands of troops, both north and south, traveled through on multiple campaigns of the bloodiest war in American history.
