Barely a month into the campaign, tension between the team’s best player, Latrell Sprewell, and newly hired head coach P.J. Carlesimo, culminated in a shocking episode of violence that not only further humiliated an already-scuffling franchise but ultimately defined the career of an otherwise decorated four-time All-Star.
