South Africa assumed the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council this week - taking the helm of the most powerful UN Organ where it will complete its two-year term at the end of December. The country's envoy says they've sought to build consensus in the Council despite the complexities of conflicts on its agenda. Pretoria has used its term to foster a closer linkage between the UN and the African Union, tried to re-envision the Council's inability to move the Palestinian cause closer to a resolution while finding its voice amid competing interests that continue to raise serious questions about the body's declining legitimacy.
