Leadership Skills in PROBLEM SOLVING - 6 BEST Problem Solving Skills to Adopt!
One of the key skills and requirements to be a good leader is your problem solving abilities. Why is this?
Because through the process of problem solving, you grow your leadership skills, and you provide a solution to a client, your team or your company that can literally change things in a dramatic way.
In reality, problem solving is a hugely valuable skill that helps you stand out from the crowd.
My name is Chris Igwe and I have over 35 years’ experience, creating, growing, and leading teams while living and working in 5 countries, as well as doing the same with teams across other countries.
I will share with you 6 leadership skills to adopt as part of your problem-solving tool kit.
#1 Problem Solving Skills – RESEARCH
You must first research the issue and gather as much information, knowledge and data as there is available. This means such things as: what is the real problem (financial, staff, internal, external, suppliers, shareholders, supply chain etc etc). What is the actual source, or origin of the problem?
#2 Problem Solving Skills – UNDERSTAND THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM
Is the problem a human one, or a structural one involving a real and fundamental rethink of the business in question?
How much time will you realistically need to solve it, and who needs to assist in that process. Be realistic about timelines. It is better to under-promise and over deliver, than the other way round.
This problem solving techniques is crucial.
#3 Problem Solving Skills – ASSEMBLING THE TEAM
The biggest issue here is the fact that many leaders will want to ensure that they take the credit for the eventual solution. I would strongly recommend against having any such attitude.
Remember that you want to get the support and buy-in of the team you lead, so do not steal their moment to shine and give you the very best of themselves. Bring in those from inside and outside the company to help.
#4 Problem Solving Skills – INVOLVE THE STAKEHOLDERS
This is a danger area, where I have seen good leader(s) fail in their mission.
I cannot suggest strongly enough that it is always best to keep people informed, even if you do not share the actual information, but this reassures them that you are on the right track, or that they can trust you.
#5 Problem Solving Skills – SHARE THE LOVE
In my career, I have found that the bigger the problems, the greater the challenge and the more I was motivated and excited to find a solution to the problem.
It is really important at these times to refer back to those who were involved in the project and helped contribute to the solution.
