There are 9 criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder in the DSM-5 and I am doing a video series on each of the traits. Today I discuss criteria #5 Has a sense of entitlement (i.e. unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations.”. Narcissists think they are better than everyone and narcissists think they deserve special treatment. This sense of entitlement that a narcissist, or someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder has, allows them to be manipulative and controlling. The narcissist complains about everything because of this sense of entitlement they have. They think they deserve special treatment and that they should be treated better than everyone else. This criteria for NPD helps explain how the narcissist can appear to think only of themselves. This is combined with their lack of object constancy and their inability to see themselves any other way that special and deserving of the special treatment. This also helps explain why the narcissist can be so brutal in their narcissist punishment tactics, while seemingly oblivious to how it affects everyone around them. The narcissist is self-centered and only focused on themselves. They have a lack of empathy so if you are offended by their expectation of special treatment, they can’t understand why you would be upset and offended due to the narcissist lack of empathy. It may seem the narcissist gets what they deserve when things don’t go their way, however. This may feel especially true when the narcissist always walks all over other people to get their way. With the narcissistic abuse, gaslighting, and silent treatment in relationships, the narcissist always thinks they are in control. They are masters at manipulation. The narcissist sense of entitlement is difficult to fully understand but if you can know how the narcissist uses their sense of entitlement as a criteria for NPD, then you can better protect yourself.
