And so it begins... One of the world's greatest spectacles, the Great Migration, has commenced. Just this morning, our guests in the Mara witnessed thousands of wildebeest crossing the Sand River. The Great Migration is a remarkable natural phenomenon involving the movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, across vast distances in East Africa.
While most people associate the Great Migration with the iconic and dramatic wildebeest river crossings in the Masai Mara and Serengeti during peak safari season from June to October, there’s much more to this incredible event. The journey is a year-round cycle driven by the search for fresh grazing and water. It spans a circuit of about 1,200 miles and includes calving in the southern Serengeti around January to March, followed by the migration northward as the dry season approaches.
This morning's crossing at the Sand River marks the beginning of the wildebeest's perilous trek through predator-rich areas, where they face numerous challenges from crocodiles in the rivers to lions and other big cats on land. The sheer determination and survival instincts of these animals are truly awe-inspiring, making the Great Migration a must-see natural wonder.
