문 대통령 한중일, 한일 연쇄 정상회담 ,… 수출규제 사태 돌파하나
Our starting point this morning,… the South Korean leader's trip to China.
It's the second and final day of President Moon Jae-in's stay in the country,… and a lot is on the line on this Tuesday as he attends a trilateral meeting with China and Japan.
He'll also meet one-on-one with Japan's Prime Minister at a time of frayed relations between Seoul and Tokyo.
Let’s get the detail from our presidential correspondent Shin Se-min, traveling with the president.
Se-min, has the busy day of diplomacy started in Chengdu?
In fact yes, right at this very moment as we speak.
President Moon Jae-in’s first on his schedule, on this Christmas Eve,… is a business summit with the leaders of China and Japan hosted by the businessmen and women of the three countries.
With the big wheels gathered together the leaders are set to discuss free trade agreements as well as their economic cooperation at a time of growing trade protectionism.
Next up on the Korean leader’s schedule,… three-way summit.
His goal is earning the support of Beijing and Tokyo for the Korean peace process.
Perhaps putting back on his hat of being a mediator, the president wants them to do what they can do to bring the regime back to talks,… and away from its aggressive rhetoric and threats.
Another big highlight on this Tuesday,… is a rare one-on-one between leaders of South Korea and Japan.
With ties at their lowest ebb in years over trade, security and history issues,… the meeting between President Moon and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe could serve as a turning point in a positive direction.
Still tension still lingers.
Ahead of their summit today,… the Japanese government announced Friday last week that it has relaxed some of export restrictions against Seoul,… a move viewed as a conciliatory gesture.
But the South Korea’s presidential office said while the move may be deemed “some progress”,… it is not sufficient enough to put the trade controls at rest.
As for how the summit turns out still remains as the big unknown from the president’s two-day trip to China.
We’ll just have to keep a close eye on the series of meetings left before the president heads back home later in the afternoon.
Mark?
