LaVilla is a historic neighborhood in Jacksonville that was once an independent black town and epicenter for black progress.

LaVilla was incorporated in 1866 after the Emancipation Proclamation and end of the American Civil War. It was settled by Gullah Geechee descendants and U.S. Colored Troops veterans. It is the actual birthplace of James Weldon Johnson, leader of the NAACP, composer of the National Black Anthem and Principal of Old Stanton, the first school for black children in Florida.
