The harmonic balancer, which is also sometimes called a vibration dampener, is a typically rubber-mounted pulley on the front of the engine that has some important jobs. Primarily, it helps absorb and dampen vibrations from the crankshaft to allow your engine to run smoothly. It also maintains proper belt alignment for accessories like the alternator and power steering.
Now let’s get into the symptoms:
Engine Vibration
This is by far the most common symptom of a bad harmonic balancer. As the rubber material breaks down, the harmonic balancer loses its ability to absorb vibrations properly. This leads to excessive vibration, normally at certain RPM ranges. Sometimes it comes and goes as engine speeds change. Bad vibration can indicate it’s time to replace the harmonic balancer.
Misaligned Belt Drive
Related to vibration, if the rubber on the harmonic balancer fails badly, the pulley can become crooked or wobbly. This leads to misaligned belts for accessories like the power steering, alternator, and AC compressor. You’ll notice noise from slipping belts or these components failing to work properly.
Noisy Engine Operation
As it wears out, the harmonic balancer can make the engine noisy. You might hear rattling, knocking or squeaking sounds from the front of the engine. The harmonic balancer is made from multiple layers - as the rubber bonding it deteriorates, the components can shift subtly, causing noise.
Visible Wear or Damage
By physically looking at the harmonic balancer, you can spot some issues too. Check for surface cracks in the rubber, which indicate it is breaking down. Also look for signs it has separated from the inner metal pulley. There should be no slipping, gaps, or wobbling between the inner and outer parts.
Oil Leak
The harmonic balancer is designed with a seal around the crankshaft to retain oil. If this rubber seal is damaged due to wear or the balancer becoming crooked, it can leak oil at the front of the engine. Watch for oil dripping down from the balancer region.
Engine Performance Problems
While not as common, in some cases a failing harmonic balancer can cause driveability problems. If it allows too many damaging vibrations, this can negatively impact ignition timing and combustion efficiency. You may notice some power loss, rough idle, or decrease in fuel economy.
