India is home to 70 per cent of the tigers in the world, and the Bengal tiger, a magnificent yellowish orange big cat, is the national animal of the country. The Bengal tiger was chosen as the national animal because of its grace, strength, agility and enormous power. The Project Tiger programme was launched in India in 1972 as a conservation programme to save the Indian tiger population. The programme has been a success, and India’s tiger population is reviving again. Preliminary results of India’s latest tiger census suggest that the nation’s tiger population will rise from 2,226 in 2014 to more than 3,000 in 2019.
