Time Lapse Chronicles: An 11-week Recording
This recording was started on March 17th and was stopped, officially, on June 5th with only one battery change. We used two cameras positioned at 45 degrees on a tabletop set-up with a simple grow light hanging from above. One camera was specifically set to vertical and the other left as horizontal.
If you know us, we are on Instagram all the time. We choose the vertical format for quick easy video creation to post to this popular medium in "story format". While anything natural presents a unique set of challenges, our wax bulb flower did not disappoint.
Creating content like this is easy with the close-up and macro capabilities of the Afidus ATL-200s optical zoom lens. In the past, plant growth has been challenging, typically requiring a DSLR, macro lens, intervalometer, some finger crossing, and a lot of luck. Who wants to tie up expensive camera gear for a week or two waiting for something to maybe happen at some point?
Fact: DSLR’s have a shutter life, in the case of this video, brace yourself... 11 weeks works out to 110,880 minutes, with a capture every five minutes, this video gobbled up 22,176 frames. If a DSLR has a shutter life of 150K frames this project could potentially overwork a mechanical shutter. At the very least, in the past, it would make us think twice about the wear & tear vs the project's merit. Now, with the sweet Afidus zoom lens, plant growth is easily within anyone’s reach. If it ends up not working out (plants don't always cooperate) the Afidus is ready for round two, three, and more.
