14 May 2023. I was introduced to the compositions of Sean Quinn, accordionist, keyboard player, guitarist and composer from Cushendun, Co. Antrim by Bill Black who (among a host of other musical and non-musical things!) publishes the superb website, [ Ссылка ] Sean's music is steeped in references to his stomping grounds, mainly in County Antrim. This is, to my ear, a particularly fine jig. The tune is named after a chasm in the cliffs just outside of Newcastle, Co. Down on the Ballach Road. There is a massive drop that falls to the sea below. There's a legend which says a local girl called Maggie was walking home with a basket full of eggs. In order to escape a soldier giving chase to her, she attempted to jump the chasm and fell to her death below.
There have however been different variations of the story in which Maggie jumps, makes it safely to the other side and not one of the eggs in her basket were broken.
