Nationals Senator Matt Canavan has labelled the Albanese government’s mandatory code of conduct for supermarkets as a “wet lettuce form of regulation”.
ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb has revealed the consumer watchdog will seek significant penalties for Woolworths and Coles if it is successful in its legal action against supermarket giants.
She believes there needs to be a deterrent to stop not only supermarkets but other retailers from misleading consumers.
“I’m not excusing Woolies and Coles either, but they’re obviously not scared of what the Labor Party’s doing,” Mr Canavan told Sky News host Paul Murray.
“They’re continuing to act like this despite the threats of a mandatory code of conduct, which is a wet lettuce form of regulation.”
