I took a drive down into the Everglades and fished Tamiami Trail Canal on a hot and windy spring afternoon. In the late spring when water levels are lowest, these deeper canals hold more fish than at any other time of the year. It is usually a mix of various exotic cichlids and some native residents sprinkled in here and there. During this particular outing the Mayan cichlids were out in full force. It was tough to get through the Mayans to get anything else, but I did manage to catch a few other species.
