Marie Antoinette was the last queen of France. She was mainly known for her extravagant lifestyle at the Palace of Versailles.
Aged just 14 years, she was sent to France by her mother Empress Maria Theresa to get married to the future King, Louis XVI. Public life for the new Queen was everything but easy. However, the Queen had a passion for luxurious clothes, wigs and pieces of jewellery. Her luxurious life did not last for a very long time. Apart from the monarchs at Versailles, the French people were starving. In anger, the people demanded that the rulers should be held responsible for this suffering. This was the start of the French Revolution, followed by horrific massacres. King Louis XVI. was executed. Princess Lamballe, who was Marie Antoinette's best friend, was terribly mutilated, beheaded and her head, heart and genitalia were put on pikes by the angry mob. Later on, after the execution of her husband, Marie Antoinette was decapitated as well. Marie's second child, heir Louis Charles, died a few days before the Bastille was stormed. The tragedy didn't stop there, since Marie's third child, Louis Charles, was also imprisoned. He was just 10 years old and was forced to admit that his mother and aunt had incestuous relations with him.
Almost two years later, Louis-Charles died. His heart was smuggled out of the prison (Bastille) after his autopsy. Until today, the heart of the uncrowned prince survived.
