Purging on a GM locomotive is a customary item every time the unit has been shut down and has cooled off. Purging allows moisture that may have formed in the cylinders a way to escape.
The Waterloo Central’s GMD-1 locomotive had been shut down for 2 1/2 days. So a purge was necessary.
