The "Love Theme from Spartacus" was written in 1960 by composer Alex North as part of the soundtrack to the blockbuster epic film Spartacus, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglass and Sir Lawrence Olivier. He was nominated for an Oscar that year for best score, but lost to Ernest Gold's score for "Exodus". You can hear the original orchestral setting of the Love Theme here: [ Ссылка ]
After its initial release, the Love Theme became a part of jazz pianist Bill Evans' repertoire, who recorded it several times. My personal favorite is featuring flautist Jeremy Steig, which you can hear here: [ Ссылка ] . Other musicians who have recorded this tune include Yusuf Lateef, Ahmad Jamal, and even Carlos Santana.
I was first drawn to this tune after hearing Joe Venuti's version on his album "Joe in Chicago 1978" about ten years ago (you can hear it here: [ Ссылка ]). Something about the simplicity of the tune mixed with Venuti's phrasing really spoke to me, and I couldn't get it out of my head. When I started this trio project and began combining different classical and jazz stylistic elements, the Love Theme from Spartacus was one of the first tunes I added to the repertoire. I hope you enjoy this version.
