Germany plans to compensate Polish Nazi victims
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced plans to aid surviving victims of the Nazi occupation in Poland, acknowledging Germany's historical responsibility for the millions of victims. Scholz emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns of elderly victims, although he did not specify the timing or amount of the compensation for the approximately 40,000 survivors.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed hope that the compensation would be distributed soon, within months rather than years. He recognized the gesture as a positive step, despite acknowledging that no amount of money could fully compensate for the wartime atrocities. Tusk noted that while formal reparations are legally resolved, the promised aid could enhance German-Polish relations.
The announcement follows a change in Poland's government, which has led to a friendlier tone towards Germany. The previous government had demanded reparations of €1.3 trillion. Tusk highlighted Germany's commitment to European security as crucial, especially in preventing future conflicts.
During joint government consultations, German and Polish leaders agreed on an action plan addressing both historical and current issues, including defense policy. This marked the first such talks since 2018. The plan includes enhancing defense cooperation, increasing production capacities, and promoting joint initiatives, particularly in tanks and ammunition, to support Ukraine amidst ongoing tensions with Russia and Belarus.
The action plan also mentions the construction of a German-Polish House in Berlin to commemorate the victims and history of the German occupation.
