Talking with Shamai Sam Gibsh, distinguished Israeli/American artist and the author of "Terra Sigilata. Smoke, Fire & Clay" book. We first met in Tel-Aviv on the roof of his two-storey workshop at the heart of the ancient Yaffo district. The place is surrounded (but not surrended) by modern high-rise buildings. The roof filled with gas-kilns of all calibers is the potters dream on its own. That's where Shamai conducts most of his firings while in Israel. But Shamai is consummate world traveler and it's hard to catch him in Israel.
Just a brief talk introducing his unique Terra Sigilata techniques and finding. In half hour we just scratched the surface and covered one chapter out of twelve. We talk about using layering techniques and forces of fire to create stunningly alive surfaces.
