At 1am on November 5, the recently restored South Door of Florence Baptistery was transported in two sections from the Opificio delle Pietre Dure to the Opera del Duomo Museum.
Andrea Pisano’s masterpiece has reached its final destination, where it will be displayed in a large purpose-made case in the Sala del Paradiso from December 9 onwards.
Crafted between 1330 and 1336, the South Door is the oldest of the three Baptistery doors. Made in gold and bronze, it weighs 8 tons.
