This video shows how to roast flax seeds on the stove top and also how to grind them after roasting. Put a dry pan on the stove and turn heat up to medium. Pour in enough whole, raw flax seeds to cover bottom of pan. Shake gently every 20 to 30 seconds or so. Keep an eye on them so they don't burn. Cook until seeds are a golden-brown color. It usually takes about five to six minutes to toast the flax seeds.
When they are done, turn off burner, take pan off burner, and let seeds cool. Store whole roasted flax seeds in an airtight container in refrigerator. Before eating, grind flax seeds you want to use with a coffee grinder or mortar and pestle. Ground flax seeds are easier to digest than whole flax seeds. They are great on oatmeal, salads, or whatever you like.
One tablespoon of ground flax seeds has approximately 37 calories. They are high in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.
