Did your chicken lay a water balloon egg? There is nothing to worry about and it’s perfectly normal if the shell-less egg is a rare not so often occurrence. These strange eggs can happen usually when chickens start to lay again after their annual molt of after taking their egg-laying winter break. Sometimes in a young pullets very first egg or an older hens last eggs. If the problem becomes regular then there is something wrong underlying that needs to be resolved.
Shell-less and deformed eggs could also be caused from a calcium deficiency so you want to make sure you have oyster shell supplement available free choice on the side (not mixed into their feed.) You can also feed them back their own egg shells. Black soldier fly larvae is high in calcium, and some dark leafy vegetables like kale are also a great calcium rich treat. In emergency circumstances you can use avian calcium supplement in powder or liquid forms. Chickens need calcium to not just form their shells, but also in order to help them with the contractions needed in egg laying.
Another reason is if the previous egg stayed too long in your chicken’s shell gland, causing the shell-less egg to be laid too soon. Not enough protein absorbed in their diet, inflammation of the oviduct due to infection or disease, or heat stress, predators or pecking order distress, can cause the soft shell.
Chickens can sometimes lay shell-less, deformed, tiny eggs, or X-Large eggs with multiple yolks inside. It’s rare but not uncommon to see when you raise chickens.
Layer feed has calcium in it, but I do not recommended feeding to pullets that are not at age of laying. As the calcium is too high for their systems and can damage their kidneys.
SHELL-LESS EGGS ARE NOT EDIBLE. The egg shell is what keeps bacteria out and without that, these eggs could be contaminated and should not be consumed.
