The second band of the night was one that I've actually seen before when they reunited for a couple of the A389 shows in Baltimore, one of which saw them being heckled by Mike Cheese of Gehenna, and they'd also play The Acheron in Brooklyn (RIP), as part of a mini tour around one of the A389 events (there's photos from that event, one of them being used for the band's Metal Achieves page). The band I'm talking is Catharsis; one of the most creative bands to come out of Hardcore in the 90s and also one of the most politically outspoken protest bands of their time. Initially active from 1994 to 2002, Catharsis was the brain child of musician & activist Brian Dingledine, and would release a demo, an EP, four splits, two full length records, and three compilations in their time as a band.
There were quite a few ways Catharsis differed from their contemporaries in the 90s; there were a variety of tempos used in their music but they were a bit faster than a lot of their peers, weren't super mosh heavy compared to most other bands in an era known for ignorant groove, had a very Punk attitude that seeped into the music as well as the lyrical themes, even more political than most in an era that had quite a few active socio-political movements at the time, and a distinctly Metal influence that went beyond the heaviness most bands stopped at, with a ton of guitar wizardry and solos. All to the accusatory delivery of Brian's pissed off vocals, likely inspired by the world of inequities that he's dedicated much of his life to fighting.
Catharsis was insane the first time I saw them in 2013 at the Ottobar for their first reunion since calling it a day in 2002 and about ten years later they still deliver a powerful performance. Be sure to check out their amazing discography, the other bands they've done, their current projects, and also very important; Brian's activism and the issues he tackles for the sake of a better tomorrow for us all.
Members of Catharsis have previously been a part of Cortez, Hail the Night, Trial, Prong, 3 Inches of Blood, Summers End, Between Earth & Sky, Otis Reem, Ümlaut, Walls of Jericho, Sect, Undying, Gut Feeling, War Prayer, Divide & Conquer, Unsettled, From the Depths, Requiem, Fear Is The Path To The Dark Side, Wait in Vain, Tooth & Claw, An Idol of our Fear, Blownapart Bastards, Paint It Black, and possibly others?
