Verse 4.4: Swami Aparajitananda appreciates scope of creativity in the illustrations - hints for Sādhanā.
Outward Illustrations:
Illustration 1: Flash of lightning (Consciousness) - Swamiji expands on its majesty, splendour, timing and result.
Illustration 2: Winking of eyes - most natural phenomenon, but lack of awareness in recognising or noticing it. Continuous living in awareness of present is recommended. Frequency and familiarity of the illustrations are beautifully explained.
Verse 4.5: Inward Illustrations:
Consciousness, mind and sankalpa are defined. Thinking of Brahman with the help of mind i.e. upasmaran is explained nicely. Meditation actually is to pay attention and witness wandering mind; not to stop mind.
Verse 4.6: That Brahman (Own Supreme Self) is vananīya and vachanīya is explained beautifully. One who worships Brahman as Self is worshipped by all (Dhruva).
Verse 4.7: A funny question answer session follows. Shankarāchārya ji finds a purpose in this, viz. is it all over or more remains TO BE KNOWN or TO BE DONE. Guru says Knowing is the result of Sādhanā. Here wrong notions about Vedānta and Yoga are attacked.
Verse 4.8: Some additional instructions TO DO for those who do not know i.e. for preparation of mind are given by Guru. Entire Sādhanā process is included in -
1. Vedas - Knowledge, goal and direction
2. Art of action - Karma Yoga
3. Tapas - attention, concentration
4. Conservation of energy
Verse 4.9
5. Truth as result -
What happens when one attains Truth this way is a lofty concept, which is explained most beautifully.
Thus, Upanishad shows strong, straight method to know yourself as you are.
The talk concludes with pranāms to Mā Sharadā, Guru Paramparā, Rishis and a devotional chanting of Ātmashatakam by Swamiji.
