Norse mythology is the body of mythology of the North Germanic peoples stemming from Norse paganism and continuing after the Christianization of Scandinavia. The primary sources of Norse mythology are the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, both collections of Old Norse mythological and heroic poems, and the sagas, which are prose narratives, often based on historical events that include elements of mythological themes.

The Poetic Edda consists of a collection of poems that date back to the 13th century but are thought to be based on earlier oral tradition. It includes poems like the "Hávamál," which contains the sayings of Odin, and the "Völuspá," a cosmogonic poem describing the creation of the world and its eventual destruction.

The Prose Edda, written by the Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century, serves as a guide for poets and contains a prose narrative of Norse mythology, providing explanations for various myths and their origins.

Norse sagas, on the other hand, are historical narratives that often intertwine with mythological elements. These sagas, such as the "Saga of the Volsungs" and the "Saga of the Ynglings," tell the tales of legendary heroes and events in a quasi-historical context.
