Our visit to Theunissen in the Free State was filled with captivating sights and a mix of emotions. One notable highlight was the train station, even though its active days seemed to be behind it. It was heartening to witness the presence of diligent security guards, demonstrating a commitment to preserving the town's heritage and infrastructure. Moving forward, our exploration led us to the Voortrekker Memorial, an important landmark situated in front of the Town Hall. This significant piece of history was being carefully safeguarded by dedicated security personnel as well. The sense of reverence and appreciation for the past was palpable, and I felt privileged to have the opportunity to wander through this meaningful space. As we continued our journey through Theunissen, the local school caught our eye. Its expansive grounds and impressive facilities were indicative of a community that prioritises education and values its youth. As our visit drew to a close, we encountered the town's sports fields, a stark contrast to the vibrant memories they likely held. These fields, which once echoed with the laughter and cameraderie of games, now remained untouched, a poignant reminder of the shifting tides of time.
