LESSON NOTES
A team can focus on two things:
• task
• relationship
And, for each, there are 2 elements:
• - the content
• The process
This gives us 4 quadrants where you need to attend to your team leadership that you need to attend to:
1. Task/Content
This is the basic job the team is there to do: what they need to do and the outcomes you need from them
2. Task/Process
This is how the team needs to tackle their task. The plans, systems, processes, rules.
It is also how they go about solving problems and making decisions.
3. Relationships/Content
This is the nature of the relationships you wish to create. Ranging from formal hierarchies, reporting lines, and collaborations, to informal networks
4. Relationships/Process
This is how the team communicates – both amongst its members and with other collaborators and stakeholders outside of the team.
Includes things like ground rules for behaviors.
RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
1. The Four Quadrants of Team Leadership model sets out what we need to attend to as a team leader. Inventory your performance against them. How well are you performing? Where are your strong and weak points? (4 MC CPD Points)
2. What changes do you need to make? (2 MC CPD Points)
3. Make those changes and monitor your performance and the outcomes your choices have on your team's performance for two weeks. Reflect on what you learn and what your next priorities are. (3 MC CPD Points)
