This video demonstrates a Japanese style pruning of Viburnum f. plicatum tomentosum 'Mariesii' (double file Viburnum). Normally, this is a dense shrub which can be used for screening. Lovely white lace cap flowers appear late Spring followed by red fruit. The red fruit is enjoyed by birds.
This shrub blooms on old wood so the shrub is pruned after flowering. The red fruit is left on.
A distinct tree like appearance can be created with this shrub using bonsai techniques of pruning. When bonsai techniques are used in the landscape, it is called Niwaki. A framework is created using bonsai "rules". The shrub is pruned with layering which in bonsai applications is called "making a space for the birds to nest." Bar branches (branches that form a "T") and "eye poking branches" are pruned out.
Pruning in this manner allows for a light and airy feeling to these shrubs. Bop shows us how to establish the framework and the pruning of new growth.
