Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles Mass during the Day
Lectionary: 591
Reading I: Acts 12:1-11
Now, at the same time, King Herod extended his hand to afflict some members of the Church. He killed James, the brother of John, with the sword. Seeing that it pleased the Jews, he decided to apprehend Peter as well during the days of Unleavened Bread. After capturing Peter, he put him in prison under the custody of four squads of soldiers, intending to bring him before the people after the Passover.
Peter was kept in prison, but the Church fervently prayed to God on his behalf. Then, on the night before Peter was to be presented, he was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, with guards stationed at the door of the prison. Suddenly, an Angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell. The Angel tapped Peter and awakened him, instructing him to rise quickly. As the chains fell off Peter's hands, the Angel told him to dress, put on his boots, and wrap his garment around himself. Peter followed the Angel, not realizing that what was happening was real and not just a vision.
They passed by the guards and arrived at the iron gate leading to the city, which opened on its own accord. They went out together, walking along a certain street, and then the Angel departed from Peter. Finally realizing what had happened, Peter said to himself, "Now I know, truly, that the Lord sent his Angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the people of the Jews were expecting."
Responsorial Psalm: 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
Response: The angel of the Lord will rescue those who fear him.
Reading II: 2 Tm 4:6-8, 17-18
For I am already being worn away, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. Do your best to come to me soon.
But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Alleluia: Mt 16:18
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel: Matthew 16:13-19
Then Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
