There have been a number of military coups across Africa recently. In fact, the continent has seen about nine coups since 2020, with the most recent being the coup in Gabon. Gabon’s former president, Ali Bongo, was ousted by his cousin, who was also the head of the presidential guard, just a few hours after Ali was re-elected into office. While many have condemned the coup in Gabon as an orchestrated scam, we’ve seen the government in Gabon take some moves that could suggest otherwise.
The deposed Gabonese president's son, Noureddin Bongo Valentin, as well as a number of other cabinet members, have been arrested and charged with "high treason, active corruption, and falsifying the president’s signature” as reported by AFP yesterday.
According to André-Patrick Roponat, the public prosecutor in Libreville, Gabon's capital, Ali Bongo's eldest son, former presidential spokesman Jessye Ella Ekogha, and four other people were "indicted on Tuesday and remanded in custody."
