(8 May 1961) At the station, the warmest of greetings were exchanged between the Royal guests and President and Donna Carla Gronchi. Then came the people's welcome on the drive through Rome. At a civic reception at the Capitol, the Mayor presented a golden replica of the statue of the goddess Roma, and in her speech the Queen referred to dates that schoolboys remember: 55 BC (the Roman invasion of Britain) was one of them. ® Attendance at the International Horse Show was another highlight. Her Majesty presented the awards, first and second prizes went to Captain Ringrose of Ireland.
