(7 Oct 2014) Police used water cannon and tear gas in an attempt to disperse demonstrators along the Turkey-Syria border protesting on Tuesday against the Islamic State group's advance on Kobani.
Islamic State fighters, backed by tanks and artillery, have pushed into the embattled and strategic Syrian town, touching off heavy street battles with the town's Kurdish defenders.
A strong Turkish military presence was amassed on the border on Tuesday, a day after Islamic State militants raised their black flag over Kobani.
Warplanes believed to have been sent by the US-led coalition on Tuesday also struck positions held by Islamic State militants in the area that beleaguered Kurdish forces have been struggling to defend.
The protests were not isolated to the Turkish-Syria border on Tuesday.
Media reports say police in Istanbul and at least six other Turkish cities clashed with demonstrators protesting the Islamic State group's advance on Kobani.
