Emotions are a fact of life. Both good and bad, all of us have feelings, but some of us tend to avoid and stuff our emotions, which is never helpful and can be extremely harmful to our wellbeing. The goal is not to deny or suppress your emotions but to learn how to manage, process and express them in healthy ways.
Emotional awareness is key since it allows you to gain control of how you react to your feelings. This self-awareness is exhibited by a profound knowledge of your feelings as they come in real time. True awareness requires emotional literacy, which involves the ability to understand and communicate your emotions in a linguistic system.
Before you can express your emotions in appropriate ways, you must understand them, including their source. Keep in mind that often there may be another underlying emotion which you’ve been holding onto without realizing it, like fear or anger.
Similarly, you could be feeling unhappy or stressed and you take it out on the first person or situation that rubs you the wrong way. More often than not, it’s usually someone close to you which could be hazardous to your personal relationships.
Cool down. Counting to 10, breathing deeply, meditation or taking a time out are all great techniques to regain composure and get some perspective over your feelings.
Keeping a journal and writing down thoughts and feelings is a great way to channel your anxiety. Studies show that those who keep a journal tend to have lower stress levels than those who don’t. Also, when you release all those pent-up emotions and put them down on paper, they have less of a hold over you.
Processing feelings means allowing yourself to feel. If you’re sad, allow yourself the process of being sad. If you’re angry, take it out on a punching bag or scream into a pillow.
Empathize and have compassion for others by looking at things from the other person’s point-of-view, instead of simply assuming the worst and lashing out. This can truly open up doors of communication, and help you understand and respect the other person and why they behave or react the way they do. Thanks for watching and take care!
