In the gardens
In the gardens and the shipyards,
you came to upset my life.
And the north wind blowing over the Cyclades
reminds me that I am left very poor, and with little wine indeed.
As if I were in a mythical golden sea,
you came full of pride and bravado, dressed in exquisite apparel,
to secretively whistle to me the sorrowful verses of the Franco-Levantine, 1
as you did to so many others before.
I will prepare traps for you in the street corners;
I will set boughs to snare you in the backyards and the uphill paths;
I will make you unable to further cause sentimental troubles,
oh you, black pigeon!
Note 1
The Franco-Levantine (Gr. Frangosyriani, i.e. the Franco-Levantine girl from the island of Syros, Cyclades islands) is one of the most famous Greek pop songs; its verses describe the passion of a man for a young girl. These verses have been endlessly reproduced by Greek young boys flirting with girls.
