Today we’re exploring the personality of King Charles V of France. He was the philosopher-king, a great medieval reformer, the redeemer of France, and a monarch, handicapped by body but not by the mind. The third king of the Valois dynasty, Charles the Wise inherited a sickly France, crippled by war, disease, banditry and popular insurrection. Through learned rule and strategic action, he turned the tide of the Hundred Years’ War, and reinvigorated the institutions and culture of a kingdom undergoing rapid decline. Let’s profile him.

Note: Christine de Pizan's achievements greatly surpass those I mentioned. She certainly did write on the portrayal of women in ancient works, particularly in Ovid's poetry, but to mention that alone is reductive. She wrote widely on politics and philosophy, and many of her social and literary criticisms are directed to contemporaries, not just ancient figures.
