This watch is driven by a main spring whereas a quartz timepiece is driven by an electronic stepper motor. The gear train of a Spring Drive movement reflects that of a standard mechanical movement. Grand Seiko has gone a step further by thermocompensating the quartz in the new 9R movements which helps counter the variation of vibration.

Kevin examines the new Spring Drive components which allow the movement to understand that as quartz gets warmer or cooler that it may vibrate faster or slower. This allows the new 9R movements to feature and even tighter 10 seconds per month tolerance.
